Great series by Emily Rodda. Have to admit, a bit slower and not as good as the Deltora series. But great for a bit younger audience. Read up to the 5th book to my 5yo and she loves them. The book centers around a young boy that lives in a village (Rin) which is comprised of a tribe of people that are hardworking warrior class.
The main character, Rowan, is different from everyone else in his village as he's shy and introverted. He fears just about everything, but during his adventures, he overcomes his fears and ends up finding courage in the most dire of situations....and becomes the hero.
The series really meshes together well....from book to book. It does have some good twists, and not very predictable- overall a great story and could be a good read for young readers - boy or girl.

A great adventure story for kids!!
When a humungus beast sent by the Zebak steals Rowans' little sister, Rowan, fe eling responsible, most go after it and get his sister back. Excellently written, with an emotional crisis as well- one of the Travelers, Zebak by birth, has returned with Rowan to help find his little sister. What will she do when she gets to Zebak?
This book was excellent. I really like the way Emily Rodda wrote it, and the way she portrayed the ishkin.
Awesome awesome book, Emily Rodda. I'm in my 40s and was reading it to be able to discuss with my middle schooler, and ended up not being able to put it down. Compelling, fascinating! Love.
Despite the fact that this book can easily be read and enjoyed by an elementary age student, I still immensely enjoy the story of an underdog young boy proving that trying to be scared of nothing simply means that when you do get scared of something you will have had no practice at overcoming your fears. Love this book (my favorite in the series probably, with Keeper of the Crystal coming in a close second).
Rodda never disappoints. She is clever beyond words, and proves that her writing chops extends beyond cryptic riddles and puzzles. Every book starts with a "prophecy" that unfolds as the story goes, but Rodda is always sure to bring much more to the table. She crams in so much and so many mature themes into her "kids" books, that it's still digestible and enjoyable to a 20 something like myself.
Sometimes the editorial reviews for these books, especially for the books for younger readers, are pretty idiosyncratic if not downright misleading. But the two reviews for this book are spot on, and you will get exactly what they describe. Which is great.
Rowan pulls himself together in a convincing fashion. Adults are strong and/or weak in convincing and realistic ways. Magic is minimal and serves the larger story. The adventure is sure and well paced.
The language and the concepts are appropriate for the age group. Length is good. The plotting is challenging but not too much for a young reader. The characters and their world are engaging.
From the point of view of interest, reward, excitement, challenge and reading satisfaction I can't come up with a better series recommendation than this one. Just a very good, solid choice.
I remember having this book read to me as a kid in elementary school when the teacher would take us to the library. I forgot about it, then years later remembered it and wanted to read it. Even then, it took a couple more years and a very kind person on Yahoo! Answers to remind me what the title of this book was. After finding out, I knew I had to buy it. Reading through it once again, I relived a childhood classic. The only thing keeping this book from receiving 5 stars is its short length. Most books weigh in at around 250-400 pages, whereas this thin book has only 151, not including the preview of the next book. Nonetheless, this might make it easy for some to read, especially younger people. A great read for anyone who likes adventures.
