Just Say Hell No Escape to New Zealand Book 11 eBook Rosalind James

In a genre that has a lot of really, really, really bad writing, Rosalind James stands out as a shining exception. Of course there is the sex (and also the rugby) and the scenery that makes you want to book a ticket to New Zealand immediately -- but these books are more than that. You feel like these are real people having real lives and working through real dilemmas. And the author has the ability to actually move the reader -- there are moment that would get many readers choked up. That's really rare.

Just Say Hell No Escape to New Zealand Book 11 eBook Rosalind James Reviews

Just Say (Hell) No is the eleventh book in the Escape to New Zealand series by Rosalind James, but like the others, it is stand alone. The story is fantastic, but it is really the characters that make this a book I loved. I have to say Marko is one of my top three male protagonists of the series. I like that he is already a matured adult, and does not need the influence/help of the female protagonist, Nyree, to be a good guy. Marko steps up without any hesitation to help his cousin Ella when she needs help. She is family, and he might be treading unfamiliar water, but he is immediately all in to be there for her whatever she needs. James also does a good job of making male characters sound male. Marko can be gruff and clueless when it comes to minor things, but that makes him sound like an authentic person rather than a perfect guy for Nyree to fall in love with.

I like Nyree a lot. Nyree is an artist, and like a lot of us, she is juggling several jobs, some of which she hates, to support the job she likes. Like a lot of us, she doesn't like to work out. She has insecurities, but they come out naturally, and are never irritating (I hate when a female's insecurities become an albatross for a character or story). She is strong and not afraid to be who she is or put up with crap. She has a challenging relationship with her parents that she doesn't need fixed by her boyfriend, she is already managing it herself fine. I absolutely loved it whenever she put Marko in his place.

Last, but not least is Ella. Ella is a smart, confident, wise, kind, compassionate independent teenager. These traits are always front and center and are never overshadowed by the fact that she is also pregnant. Her pregnancy just provides opportunities to show how much she cares about doing her best. Unplanned pregnancy is a subject that can be tricky to write about, especially to a large audience with different views and experiences. James absolutely nails it and created a wonderful, human and beautiful character.
Wow. Some writers just have a voice that I want to keep hearing, and Rosalind is one of those. I have loved every book of this series, but this one is destined to go in my group of favorites that I come back to again and again - like watching a favorite movie over and over!

First of all, the writing is just spectacular... Rosalind has a unique way of setting scenes and building them out, and there were moments that I just thought "wow - that is so beautifully written... how did she think to say it just that way?!!". But of course characters and story are what we readers love, and this one has it all... Marko is another awesome alpha male New Zealand All Black rugby hero with a soft, sweet, quite unexpected center, and Nyree is a delightful new heroine who sees people by their "color" (but nothing to do with skin!) - such a unique approach. A youthful crush that's been locked deep but not quite conquered springs to life again when Marko and Nyree "run" into one another years later.

The supporting cast of characters is fantastic too, including Ella - an amazing teenage cousin, Victoria, Kors, Kane, Marko's family - especially his mother with her daily "Cards", and plenty of familiar people as well, like Hugh and Josie - how wonderful to intersect with them again!! Wrap it all up with some of that trademark sweet, sexy and sometimes just downright STEAMY (oh my goodness!) romance Rosalind writes so well, and this is a book you must read. Your emotions will run the entire spectrum - from a dog wedding that will have you laughing out loud to a gut-wrenching emotional scene likely to bring real tears to your eyes. Be prepared to laugh, cry, squirm (for sure!) and sigh - and mark "Just Say (Hell) No" as one of your favorites to read again - and again. Enjoy!!!
I remember thinking, two thirds of the way through this book, I wonder if even Rosalind James’s grocery lists would make me cry? They probably would. She’d have the loaf of bread say something to the pot roast, the asparagus interjects, and three minutes later I’m dabbing at my eyes with a Kleenex, taking a breath, and reminding myself These aren’t real groceries!

In my defense, I think anybody with a heart would get a little emotionally invested in these characters. I don’t even remember what position Marko Sendoa plays for the All Blacks (unless it’s actually called Scary Tough Guy, and to the best of my recollection it’s not); but I can tell you everything important about his character, including where his vulnerabilities are, and the same goes for his raven-haired Maori admirer/needler, the soft-and-tough, modern-&-traditional Nyree Morgan. There’s another closely intertwined subplot in here and I won’t say anything about it, other than to note that James doesn’t have to hit you over the head with anybody’s character, she just lets them talk and do their thing. She even has a couple of very realistic game scenes for Marko, and while I still don’t understand rugby any better than I did before, I not only enjoyed those scenes, I had the realization that the reason James never strikes a false note with her characters is that they’re completely, matter-of-factly real to her (I expect this is also why the sex scenes work so well. Passionate people, whether they’re passionate about their sport or the person they long for, just stir us to sympathy because we see ourselves in them).

Anyway, can’t recommend this book enough. Funny, wise, compassionate, rewarding, and will do things to your heart and tear ducts.

Oh, yeah, Marko’s a flanker. Don’t ever pick a fight with a flanker.
In a genre that has a lot of really, really, really bad writing, Rosalind James stands out as a shining exception. Of course there is the sex (and also the rugby) and the scenery that makes you want to book a ticket to New Zealand immediately -- but these books are more than that.
