I am definitely disappointed this is a novella and at the end Ms. Moning adds out takes from previously published books in the Highlander series. She also gives the story line for Ghost of a Chance, with no mention of a expected release date. There was a time when buying a Karen Marie Moning book was a sure bet for my personal library. I really should have checked this out at my public library instead of wasting my money.Tags : Into the Dreaming [Karen Marie Moning] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers.,Karen Marie Moning,Into the Dreaming,Jove,051514150X,Romance - General,AMERICAN LIGHT ROMANTIC FICTION,Fiction,Fiction - Romance,Fiction Fantasy Historical,Fiction Romance General,Fiction-Romance,General Adult,MASS MARKET,Romance - Contemporary,Romance - Time Travel,RomanceModern,Romance: Modern,United States
Into the Dreaming Karen Marie Moning 9780515141504 Books Reviews
I think some people are under the impression that this novella should be published as a regular book. It's not. It's a short story. The rest of the "book" is previously published material and lots of new stuff- deleted scenes, part of the new graphic novel, etc...If you are new to KMM, you will not like this. But if you're a die hard fan like myself, you'll def like it. Also, if you only want the short story itself, check out "Tapestry" where it was previously released for half the price. I liked this, and bought this bc it really helps tie the Highlander series with the Fever series. When I was new to KMM, I started the Fever series. I love Fever so much, it's my #1 series I recommed to people. BUT, it helps to read her Highlander series first if you can. While they seem unrelated at first, they definately intertwine as the Highlander series progresses. In an excerpt from Into the Dreaming, she talks about how this all came about- how she started from one point and got to Fever which is really what she originally wanted to publish. This is the halfway book bw both worlds IMO. I think this could get low reviews bc it seems misleading as it's being billed as Highlander #8, was previously released, and if you look at the book itself, you'd think it was a regular book, when it's only a novella. All that said, it's a must for die hard KMM fans. The story itself is good, not her best, but you can see how it's the start of everything for KMM.
Although I adored (and voraciously read) the other Highlander books by Karen Marie Moning, Into the Dreaming was a welcome change from the standard formula. Woman as seducer, man as "virginal" provided an interesting twist in familiar circumstances (time travel, Faery manipulation, castles, a beautiful woman, and a tall hunky kilt-wearing Scottish barbarian). Although all her leading men are alpha males, they never stoop to brutishness. In this story, Aedan is further depicted as the vulnerable one and Jane is the one in control.
Rip off. $7.99 for 30 minutes of a story and then a bunch of "bonus" material. If this had cost $2-3 I wouldn't have a problem, but it cost the same as her other full length books and doesn't even come close. The story had potential if only there was more to it.
Fair warning this is a short novella, not a full-length book, and it is very over-priced here on . I'd suggest buying it used or somewhere else if you want to read it. I bought it for $1.00 from an independent seller.
That said, this was a short novella from the highlander series about Jane Silee, an aspiring romance novelist who is head over heels in love with this highlander man who has been featured in her dreams for years. There is no other man for her, so she can hardly believe it when she finds his likeness on a beautifully woven tapestry. She is then transported to medieval Scotland to break a spell that has stolen her dream man's memory. Aedan MacKinnon was captured by the Unseelie King, tortured, and locked int he Unseelie realm for 500 years where he has forgotten everything except his purpose as far as the Unseelie King goes. After 500 years, the king lets him out for a month to test him. Enter Jane Sillee. It was a cute little novella and a quick read, but not particularly substantial or well-written. I enjoyed it, but not as much as some of Moning's other books; the Fever series in particular.
I have to admit to having a personal bias with this short (102 pages) story I have an ancestor-John McKenney- who served in McKinnon's foot from the Isle of Skye, was taken prisoner of war by Cromwell at the Battle of Worcester(1651) and shipped as "cargo" about the ship John and Sarah to Boston to be sold as penal labor. It was fun to pretend that our hero's grandson might have been his Laird, and his Laird's grandmother might have been born in the 21st century. This book is the quintessential "magic" of the power of faith and concern for another, along with the absolute protection of knowing exactly who one is and what one needs. Its a battle between good and evil, between the Queen of the Seelie Court of Light and the king of the Unseelie Court of Dark using the McKinnon Laird and Descendant of the Scottish king, Kenneth Alpin as the next candidate for position of Vengeance, or being saved and returned to his people through the power of love. As a continuation of her Highland series, the book introduces additional aspects of the struggles between the two court, discloses additional powers, secrets, dimensions and avenues of interactions between the mortal and immortal realms that are not impossible, although perhaps improbable. The heroine is classic Moning- mid 20s, a frustrated non-published literature major from college who, hating the plastic, steel and concrete of today, choses to work in a small town coffee shop while she continues to write her stories. Jame "meets" her Scottish Laird through her dreams, and using those dreams he becomes the basis for her literary outlet. A mysterious package arrives with a tapestry that holds the image of her dream-man and her adventure is off....Its classic Moning from "...If she had to make one more extra-shot, one-half decaf, Venti, doublecup, two sweet-n-Low, skim with light foam latte for one more picky, anorexic bimbo, she might have done bodily harm to a customer..." to "...As she sat rubbing her forehead and thinking hard, the soft syllables of a rhyme teased her memory....Jane Sillee, you've finally done it, she chided herself, you've read one too many romance novels. Only in books did heroines get swept back in time, and then they usually ended up in medieval- - - oh!...." Yeah, castles and gorgeous men.
